The Fishing

Taming the Amazon Giants: Arapaima & Catfish Encounters

The Amazon beckons with legendary fish, and none are more coveted than the mighty Arapaima. This prehistoric leviathan, an air breather reaching over 15 feet and 500lbs, lurks in the many lagoons and lakes scattered throughout the system.

The massive Arapaima:

  • Catch & Release Sanctuary: Our commitment to conservation ensures Arapaima are unharmed. Witness their impressive surface “rolls” for air, cast to them and fight them hard, then carefully revive and release them to fight another day.
  • Multiple Taming Methods: Target these giants with various tactics: streamer flies for the ultimate fly-fishing experience, medium-sized lures to trigger explosive strikes, or heavy tackle with braided line with live/dead baits for epic battles.

Catfish Extravaganza:

The Amazon’s depths harbor a variety of colossal catfish, each offering a unique challenge:

  • Surubim (Shovel-nosed Tiger Cats): We have three species of these sleek, hieroglyphically-marked predators that all fight hard and can reach over 50lbs. Some, like the “Paleta” (Firewood Shovel-nose), offer a quirky appearance. While generally using live/dead baits, lures can sometimes tempt these whiskered warriors.
  • Flat-whiskered Cat: This dynamite fish packs a punch for its size, averaging 15lbs and renowned for its delicious flesh.
  • Granulated Cat: We hold the world record for this species and they are plentiful in most of the main river system.
  • Redtail Cat: Prepare for a screaming reel! These hard-fighting champions, reaching 80lbs, will take you on a wild ride through the river.
  • Jau Cat: Nicknamed the “Rottweilers” of the river, these massive catfish (up to 180lbs) reside in fast-moving waters and rocky areas. Landing one requires a combination of finesse and brute force. We have caught many huge Jaus well over the world record here.
