Snook - Amazon Fish

Snook

Snook 1
Snook 2

Snook have a distinct lateral line running along their silver/gold body which gives them their distinguishing feature.

They have large, sloped heads leading down to huge, soft ‘bucket’ mouths that can engulf any unwary bait fish, crustacean or your lure.

Snook can be found usually inshore and in coastal and brackish waters, along mangrove shorelines, seawalls, and bridges and also on reefs and pilings near shore. Snook can also be found in the surf or in the rivers and lagoons near the coast.

They can reach over 50lb in weight and the gear required when fishing for snook is a little lighter than when fishing for tarpon. A shock leader of 40 to 60lb test is a good choice. Use a reel with a good drag system filled with 100 to 150 yards of 12-17lb test line fitted to a 6.5ft or 7ft rod.

As for lures for snook fishing, consider 1/2 to 3/4 oz Rapalas, 3/4 to 1oz bucktail jigs, Mirrolures and top water plugs. Snook fight well and can provide all the excitement of acrobatic jumps and leaps, with incredibly long, hard runs.
