In 2009, Steve Townson and his good friend, Canadian Mikey Cooke, were invited by the owner of the Fazenda Macambira Lodge, to fish for Tamabaqui and Arapaima in his two lakes. Since then Steve has returned to fish here, catching some amazing big fish.
So we’ve decided to offer this as either a quick getaway for people visiting Manaus or perhaps an extra couple of days away ‘before or after the main event in the jungle’!
This has been organised so you can extend your Amazonian adventure either before or after your main fishing break in the Amazon jungle for Peacock Bass or one of our exploratory trips. Or for people who are in the country and fancy a couple of days’ fishing for the magnificent Arapaima in particular while they are there.
After all, why not give it a go, as you’re travelling thousands of miles away from home anyway?
Macambira is a man-made lake system full of fish. The lakes have their own natural fish stocks from the many streams before they were dammed.
Tambaqui and Arapaima were later stocked many years ago to provide sport fishing for the avid angler. They have now bred naturally and the lake is brimming with hard-fighting fish.
Boats will take the anglers to the lakes where long wooden canoes are moored to take them to various fishing locations in the area.
Normally the boats are moored to the bank or trees when fishing for Tambaqui or Arapaima.
Although there are Peacock Bass and catfish in these lake systems, Tambaqui and Arapaima are our target species. Should the anglers want a break, they can try for small-medium sized Peacock Bass in the margins and trees.
TAMBAQUI
Tambaqui are natural fruit and nut foragers, but here at Macambira, these fish will take cutbait and whole fish presented to them.
They reach over 50lb here and are literally like bulldozers on speed when hooked. A big Tambaqui is nearly unstoppable and very strong tackle is needed to bully them back to the boat. They make blistering, long runs and will never give up (even when in the net).
They are deep-set, oval-shaped, heavy fish with enormous crushing teeth and pads used to break open nuts and hard fruits and they can crush a 4X treble hook as flat as a pancake! They vary from an all-over silver colour to a light-brown back with a white belly. They travel in big shoals and once a fish has been hooked, many others can be caught close together.
An average sized Tamabaqui at Fazenda Macambira is between 8-18lb, with many larger specimens taken each week.
ARAPAIMA
The Arapaima or Pirarucu is the largest freshwater fish in the world - they are known to reach over 600lb.
Being air breathers, Arapaima tend to gulp air every 20-30 minutes then shoot back down to the bottom of the lake. If they are hunting, you will see them hounding and breaking on baitfish. They tend to run in pairs and when looking after their young, the father will stay with the fry while the mother will always be lurking somewhere on the fringe. The fry ‘frizz’ on top for about a second to take air before disappearing again, another giveaway that there are giants nearby.
Although there are many fish here in the 10-50lb range, there are true leviathans here with fish caught regularly to over 200lb. Arapaima will take cutbait and whole fish with abandon in the Macambira lake systems.
The take can be as soft as a ‘pluck’ or a strike so strong it will rip the rod from your hands. A good baitrunner spinning reel or a heavy baitcaster with a bait clicker is advisable to avoid this! Arapaima jump when hooked and a 50lb silver specimen rocketing through the air is a true sight to behold. Arapaima are similar to giant Tarpon and will fight you till both of you are exhausted.
If it’s a big Arapaima you are after, then very strong tackle is advised. They are heavy bruisers, so beware, and be ready!
The lodge is situated near the Amazonian town of Nova Orlina de Norte, about 150km South East of Manaus.
It is basic but very comfortable and the food is good and wholesome. Three guest rooms with fans are set in a long bungalow-type Amazonian wooden building, each with en-suite bathrooms and covered terraces. There is permanent 110v electricity for battery-charging etc.
Breakfast can be eggs and toast, fresh fruit, coffee, tea and cakes with lunch either on the bank of the lake or back at the lodge.
In the evenings fresh fish caught by the angler is served together with beef, pork, chicken, vegetables, salads and fresh fruit. There is an open bar with beer, bottled water, soft drinks and local liquor.
A cool-box with your choice of drinks and filled with ice will be taken along each day while fishing.
