The Only Exclusive Fly Fishing Lodge In The Amazon

Agua Boa Lodge, set deep in the Amazon jungle, is a fly fishing-only operation that offers this unique experience with crystal clear water in a white sandy-bottom river, allowing some of the best sight-casting opportunities in the world.

While this river has a high head of smaller but feisty Butterfly Peacocks, our quarry is their cousin, the bigger, bolder, most aggressive Cichla temensis or Giant Three-bar Peacock. Three-bar Peacocks are like fish on steroids and grow to enormous proportions, with the world record pushing 30lb.

There are two main species here: Cichla temensis (Speckled or three-Bar) and Cichla orinocensis (Butterfly). Although the temensis goes through such a transformation in its life, you would think that it is two fish in one. A Speckled Peacock, also locally known as a ‘Paca’, is still a Cichla temensis but looks a completely different animal before it morphs into the mature, full blown Three bar.

A Paca will start off as a shoal fish with a longer, leaner body made purely for feeding and fighting, with a darker brown/purple hue on their backs and flanks with clear white dots and dashes all along. As it starts to become sexually mature, it will slowly morph into the full blown three-bar ‘Acu’. In the mid-way stage it is known as a ‘Paca-Acu’ with the bars just showing through its dots and dashes.

The Lodge

The lodge is located over 200 miles from the city of Manaus in the Northern State of Roraima in Brazil, a tributary of the remote Rio Branco (which flows into the Rio Negro, yet another major tributary of the Amazon River proper). It is set on the banks of the Rio Agua Boa, way upstream in the wilds, within landscaped gardens surrounded by pristine jungle full of wildlife.

The Agua Boa Amazon Lodge is a world-class fly fishing destination and is an Orvis endorsed lodge. It has also been voted by Forbes Magazine Spring 2010 as one of the top ten flyfishing lodges in the world. The present owner bought the lodge back in 2007 and has made major improvements to the lodge and its quality of service to the clients and every aspect of the trip.

The Lodge House is well furnished and equipped with modern facilities, open bar, games room and even a television with English channels. There is even wireless Internet access in both the Lodge House and the individual chalets to check on emails, with no additional cost to the client.

The lodge and its individual chalets are constructed from the best local materials, finished to a very high standard. With a 20-metre swimming pool and pool bar, this has to be the most perfect place to relax after a hard day’s fishing with a few sundowners.

The six fully-furnished, air-conditioned chalets are set in a row along the main river bank, with uninterrupted views to the river and its wildlife from under covered terraces fitted with tables and chairs. Each chalet has two queen-sized beds, an en-suite bathroom with heated shower, dressing room, small fridge for cold drinks and plenty of clothes and luggage storage room.

Of course, 110v electric supply is provided with standard US sockets (so UK guests will need an adapter). Each chalet is shared by two guests, but a single occupancy supplement can be provided for an additional cost.

Agua Boa by the Pool

There is daily laundry service provided at no additional cost, so guests can travel light with no need to pack too many clothes.

Breakfast is typically buffet-style, with a good choice of delicious dishes both hot and cold, breads, pastries, cakes, fresh fruit and cereals, fruit juices, tea and coffee. For those preferring to stay out fishing all day, lunch can be prepared and packed in the morning before leaving to go fishing. If fishing closer to the Lodge the chef can provide a cooked meal. A siesta can be taken after lunch at the lodge followed by an afternoon of fishing nearby. There will always be a cooler on board your fishing boat, filled with cold drinks.

In the evening a three course dinner will be served with wine in the main dining room. A full buffet is provided with a choice of various meat and fresh fish dishes, all freshly prepared by the chef. Throughout the whole day, snacks and hot and cold drinks are always available.

Days are typically hot with temperature over 60F at night and 80-90F during the day. This is fishing in the Tropics and we advise clients to bring a lightweight rain jacket/suit as it can get chilly when temperatures drop during a storm. As we are fishing in tannin-stained acidic water, there are few or no mosquitos or biting insects.

Peacock Bass of Agua

We would advise you to bring plenty of flies, as Piranhas tend to make a meal of them. Flies can be bought at the lodge along with rods, reels and flyline. Equipment can also be rented at $150 per week with Sage rods and reels with Rio flyline.

There is yet another great Amazonian gamefish eager to jump on flies here called the Aruana.

Also known as Peixe Macaco or Monkey Fish, the Aruana  are wonderful light-tackle adversaries, common in waters where Peacock Bass are found. They tend to gang up in quiet lagoons and under overhanging trees in the shade.

The prehistoric Aruana can often be seen jumping into the low-hanging branches of trees (hence the name Monkey Fish) to catch small birds, insects and even small snakes and lizards.

It is an extremely long and slim fish, like a ribbon, with a big trap door mouth and huge scales. These fish hit topwater popper flies with abandon and can also be caught on long streamer flies and small jigs. When hooked, they jump like Tarpon and can even swim backwards like eels.
